Why Won’t People Make Coffee?

Ok, I know I’m going to sound bitchy, but I just have to know if I’m the only person in the universe that actually makes coffee?

Yes, I know I’m not the only one in the universe, but at my place of work, I might be the only one. My office is within 15 feet of the “galley” where the coffee makers are. I admit it, I’m a caffeine addict, so I drink coffee pretty much all morning and into the afternoon. Since I make repeated trips to get coffee, I end up making a new pot practically every time I go for more. I don’t mind making it, since I do drink it, but why can’t anyone else? It just burns me up when I see people take the last of the pot, then just walk away. I swear, I have to make a new pot for every cup I plan to drink.

I wonder if anyone knows how to use the machine? Or, do they only drink it if it’s made already? What do they do when I’m not here? GRRR!  :-(

Would it be too bitchy to put a sign up asking others to make more if they take the last of the coffee? Am I the only one that has this issue? Let me know what you think.

Friday the 13th

This morning, I was having a discussion with a friend of mine and the subject of Friday the 13th came up. I had heard about the theory of the Knights Templar being rounded up and tortured on Friday the 13th, making it unlucky, but had no difinitive reason to say that it was unlucky myself. I’ve actually always thought of it as a lucky day for me. Anyway, I decided to look it up and see what I could find about it.

First, I’ve always had the theory myself that people expect Friday the 13th to be unlucky so they subconsciously create bad luck for themselves on that day. Well, lo and behold, I found this article on Wikipedia about just that very thing: Wikipedia on Friday the 13th - A discussion of the nocebo effect (heightened anxiety about the day causing a greater likelihood of accidents).

Then, looking further, I found this article with a ton of ideas and theories about the origins of the unluckiness of the day: Paraskevidekatriaphobia: Fear of Friday the 13th

So there you go, everything you ever wanted to know about Friday the 13th (except for the movie…I don’t pretend to explain that…) I still consider it one of my lucky days. How about you?

Dinner Time for the Boys

This was taken at dinner time last night. I’ve found that the easiest way to get all three kitty boys in the same photo is to take the picture while they’re eating. ;-)

I thought this was a cute photo of them. (You can tell that none of them is underfed…)

How to Make the Perfect Chicken Soup

We’re headed into the cooler weather, and you know what that means…more colds and flu ahead. I know, there are tons of OTC remedies for the symptoms, but don’t you agree that the most comforting thing when you have a cold is a nice, steamy bowl of homemade chicken soup?

My good friend, Jeanne, recently made some chicken soup for our friend, Cindy, who just had surgery. It was simply delicious! However, being the creative cook that I am, I had to doctor the recipe a bit when I made it this weekend. Here’s what I came up with.

In a crock pot, combine:

One whole head of celery, chopped
One large onion, chopped
One clove of garlic, chopped
One drained can of navy beans
Two large aseptic containers of organic chicken broth
Three large chicken breasts, no skin, bones or fat – chop into 1 inch cubes

Then I throw in these spices, to taste:

Thyme
Oregano
Basil
Salt
Seasoned pepper
One bay leaf

Cover it and let it cook on low for about 6-8 hours. Then add cooked brown rice (about three cups, after cooking). Let simmer another hour and it’s ready to serve.

Simply yummy! - In fact, I brought some for lunch today and need to end this post because the microwave just beeped at me.

“Simple” Path to Higher Self Esteem

About a year ago, a friend of mine asked me how one changes their outlook on life and themselves. He’s struggled with depression for years. It hasn’t stopped him from being a very successful and accomplished person, nor from being a good friend. However, he could be much happier if he could find the answer to his question.

At the time, and several times since then, I tried to explain the concept of monitoring one’s own thoughts…of being the “observer” and editing the negative thoughts to more positive ones. Somehow, he never believed it was that simple. Well, I never actually used the word “simple.” Because it’s not. To change one’s way of viewing life and oneself is a very tough thing to do after a lifetime of practicing thinking a certain way. But is it worth it? ABSOLUTELY!!!

I joined a group of women bloggers a few weeks ago and we post articles about each others’ blogs in order to help build all our traffic. The latest blogjolt recipient is Aurelia Williams. She’s a life coach, mother and wife. Her post about the way to higher self esteem really struck a chord with me, and reminded me of the conversations my friend and I had last year. She uses different words to say the same thing I was trying to communicate, but the message is still the same.

I hope my friend reads this post and then reads Aurelia’s post. Perhaps her words will make more sense than mine did. The message is the same, but the messenger is more experienced at teaching these skills.

Her site is loaded with wisdom. I invite everyone to check it out and see the posts that help them the most.

Another fun “fact”

A friend sent me a link to this page that tells all kinds of information about our birthdays. I filled it out and there was a ton of information, but this is the most interesting:

Celebrities who share your birthday:

Scott Moffatt (1983) Norah Jones (1979) Matt Doran (1976)
Celine Dion (196 8) Ian Ziering (1964) M.C. Hammer (1962)
Paul Reiser (1957) Eric Clapton (1945) Astrud Gilberto (1940)
Warren Beatty (1937) John Astin (1930) Rolf Harris (1930)
Peter Marshall (1930) Frankie Laine (1913) Vincent Van Gogh (1853)

I heard somewhere that Michael Jackson shares my birthday too, but I don’t think I’m so proud of that one….

Go see what your birthday says about you!

Maybe I should get my own talk show!

This is another of those fun tests! Here’s my score:

Your EQ is 167
50 or less: Thanks for answering honestly. Now get yourself a shrink, quick!
51-70: When it comes to understanding human emotions, you’d have better luck understanding Chinese.
71-90: You’ve got more emotional intelligence than the average frat boy. Barely.
91-110: You’re average. It’s easy to predict how you’ll react to things. But anyone could have guessed that.
111-130: You usually have it going on emotionally, but roadblocks tend to land you on your butt.
131-150: You are remarkable when it comes to relating with others. Only the biggest losers get under your skin.
150+: Two possibilities - you’ve either out “Dr. Phil-ed” Dr. Phil… or you’re a dirty liar.

What’s Your EQ (Emotional Intelligence Quotient)?

What’s your Emotional IQ? Find out here!
